Clinton Backs More Time on Iraq

March 13, 2003|From Associated Press

WASHINGTON — Former President Clinton said Wednesday that he thinks a war with Iraq can be averted if the U.S. backs a British resolution giving Baghdad more time to disarm.

"I'm not so sure we can't still avoid war and disarm Saddam Hussein, but we've all got to be together," said Clinton, speaking at a convention of the Communications Workers of America.

Under the evolving plan, a new U.N. Security Council resolution would give Iraq benchmark disarmament requirements and a deadline for achieving them.

The original cutoff date was March 17, but some countries are pushing for April 17.
