LETTERS TO THE TIMES

Judicial Nominees

March 16, 2003

Everybody seems to have an opinion about Miguel Estrada ("Latinos' Response to Estrada Is Mixed," March 13). But none of those opinions goes to the core issue for me: Is Estrada among the best and brightest we could elevate to the federal bench? Instead, we debate whether he fairly represents the Latino experience, or if he harbors a secret bias against abortion or affirmative action.

As a moderate on social issues, I am concerned about President Bush's attempts to pack the courts with right-wing ideologues. As a citizen, though, I'm much more worried about the fact that we keep letting our president nominate mediocre legal talents to our most important courts.
