* Iraq put itself on a war footing, dividing the country into four military districts under the command of President Saddam Hussein, with the heartland cities of Baghdad and Tikrit to be defended by Hussein's second son, Qusai.

* Iraq invited the chief U.N. weapons inspectors for talks in Baghdad.

Today

* President Bush will meet British Prime Minister Tony Blair and Spanish Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar in the Azores to chart strategy, as the chances of winning approval for their U.N. resolution on Iraq look dim.

Monday

* The chief arms inspectors are to appear before the U.N. Security Council and report in detail what questions remain to be answered by the Iraqis.
