College Students Help Others on Spring Break

March 25, 2003

Reading about the college students using their spring break for service projects (March 21) brought back many fond memories of the Easter week work camps I participated in, sponsored by the Alhambra Presbyterian Church in the late 1950s. We built several small buildings for the migrant ministry outside Mendota (near Fresno) and similar projects for the church mission at an Indian reservation near Bishop.

Despite coming home tired, with sore and achy muscles, paint splatters on ourselves and our clothes, we wouldn't have traded the experience for all the baby oil in Balboa. The satisfaction of not only the physical labor but the interacting with people, especially children, was worth much more than getting a tan at the beach. I hope some of my fellow workers will read this and know they are being remembered this spring.
