Lightning Hits Plane Carrying Blair to U.S.

March 27, 2003|From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Lightning struck a plane carrying British Prime Minister Tony Blair to a meeting with President Bush as the aircraft approached Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland but caused no damage or injuries, a reporter on board said.

Britain's Press Association news agency said the lightning struck the left wing of Blair's chartered British Airways Boeing 777 at about 10,000 feet.

The pilot assured passengers that "there's nothing to worry about." Blair's office said it was not aware of the incident.
