Baseball 2003 Special Pullout Preview Sectiond11-20

March 30, 2003

Five months after they completed an improbable postseason run by defeating the San Francisco Giants in Game 7 of the World Series, the Angels open the Major League Baseball season tonight against the Texas Rangers at Edison Field.

John Lackey, the rookie who started and won Game 7 of the World Series, will pitch tonight against Texas. Ismael Valdes will start for the Rangers.

Meanwhile, the Dodgers, who won 92 games last season but came up short in a bid for a wild-card berth, open the season Monday at Arizona, the defending National League West champion.

Hideo Nomo will start for the Dodgers against the Diamondbacks' Randy Johnson, who has won the NL Cy Young Award the last four years.

The Dodger home opener is April 7 against the Diamondbacks.
