WAR WITH IRAQ | IN BRIEF / SYRIA

Hundreds of Iraqis Seek Aid, Asylum

March 31, 2003|From Times Wire Reports

Hundreds of grim-faced Iraqis lined up under sunny skies outside a United Nations office in Damascus, Syria, seeking refuge or any aid they could get. Some were people who fled the war, but many others have lived in Syria several years and were seizing the opportunity to apply for asylum.

Ajmal Khybari, an official with the Office of the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees in Damascus, said about 650 Iraqis went to the agency.

He said the numbers have increased dramatically since the U.S.-led war against Iraqi President Saddam Hussein began.
