Where's the Outcry About Los Alamos?

May 05, 2003

Re "Los Alamos Job Opened to Bidding," May 1: Is Rep. Ellen O. Tauscher (D-Pleasanton) now a solitary voice in stating that the Department of Energy is incompetent and culpable for the failures at the Los Alamos National Laboratory?

Where are the congressional demands for Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham to resign following the string of grave incidents that have occurred at the nation's premier nuclear laboratory on his watch?

Why is Abraham spared the hail of criticism that met former Energy Secretary Bill Richardson following prior institutional lapses within a comparatively short tenure? And where are the calls for dismantlement of the Energy Department by Rep. Christopher Cox (R-Newport Beach)? Alas, this mercy must be the very significance and definition of compassionate conservatism.
