May 18, 2003|Ruth Ryon | Times Staff Writer

Stephen Hellberg, a former telecommunications executive, and his wife, Carissa, surf, play volleyball and windsurf. They love the Hawaiian Islands. They like high tech. They enjoy building.

With their interests in mind, the couple built this Pacific Palisades home not quite five years ago, but now they are moving to North Carolina to build again.

The Palisades home is a showplace for its architecture -- the sculptural contemporary was designed by John Wallis -- and for such features as a regulation sand volleyball court and a gym set up for kickboxing and weights.

The house has a commercial phone system, and a central computer controls all of its electrical systems, with control panels in each room.

About this house: The house is behind gates and is also on a gated street. It has views of the city, ocean, coastline and mountains.

Asking price: $6,995,000

Size: There are five bedrooms, six bathrooms and two powder rooms in the 8,300-square-foot home, which is on just under an acre.

Features: The home has a media room, library, office, two laundry rooms; a built-in aquarium with tropical fish; tropical landscaping with more than 20 mature palm trees; a cascading pool; two waterfalls; a three-car garage with storage racks for surfboards; a water filtration system, central vacuum and a backup gas-powered generator that can support the entire house.
