Antiquities Returned From North America

May 18, 2003|From Times Wire Reports

Egypt unveiled six antiquities returned from North America and said the mummy of Pharaoh Ramses I, smuggled out of the country more than 100 years ago, would be returned in October. The mummy of the 1320 BC ruler is at the Michael C. Carlos Museum in Atlanta, said Zahi Hawass, chairman of the Supreme Council of Antiquities.

The returned objects included fragments of reliefs from the walls of the tomb of Pharaoh Seti I and a statuette of Hathor, a goddess with the body of a cobra and the head of a woman. It dates from 1550 BC.
