Oxnard Man Wounded in Police Shooting

May 19, 2003|From a Times Staff Writer

An Oxnard police officer, responding to a report of a domestic dispute involving a gun, shot and injured a man Saturday after he reached for what turned out to be a tire iron, according to police.

Epigmenio Barragan, 32, of Oxnard was shot in the leg and treated at a local hospital for a minor wound, police said. Barragan was arrested on suspicion of brandishing a deadly weapon.

The incident occurred about 10:30 p.m. Saturday when officers responded to a report of a domestic dispute in the area of Palm Drive and A Street. Officers located the people involved in two vehicles, one of which drove off and was stopped by patrol officers, according to police.

An officer approached the second vehicle and saw Barragan retrieve an object and conceal it in his coat. Barragan then ran at the officer and looked as if he was reaching for a weapon, police said.
