INSIDER TRADING BOB MIESZERSKI

Singletary in Comfort Zone

May 25, 2003|BOB MIESZERSKI

As long as Singletary stays off the main track, the 3-year-old Sultry Song colt should do just fine.

In two races on dirt, the Kentucky-bred finished seventh of eight in the Santa Catalina Stakes on Jan. 18 at Santa Anita, then was last of five in an allowance race won by Belmont Stakes probable Atswhatimtalknbout a month later.

Owned by Little Red Feather Racing and trained by Don Chatlos, Singletary has fared much better on turf. He has two victories and two losses in four starts on grass and he will be favored to win another in today's $100,000-added Will Rogers Stakes at Hollywood Park.

A Grade III at one mile, the Will Rogers attracted only five other entrants, three of whom have never raced on the turf.

A hard-luck loser in the La Puente in his last start at Santa Anita on April 12, Singletary will be reunited with jockey Patrick Valenzuela.

The rider was aboard for the colt's maiden victory at nearly 30-1 in his debut Oct. 20, then was aloft when he floundered in the Santa Catalina.

The field for the Will Rogers is completed by first-time turfers Private Chef, Banshee King and American Fury and one-time grass winners Winning Stripes and Rapier Dance.

Race of the day: Woman Onfasttrack, who won four starts during the Santa Anita meet for owners John and Gladys Tomigal and trainer Bill Spawr, will try to keep her roll going in her first start of 2003 at Hollywood Park in today's fourth, the first leg of the pick six. Mike Smith will ride the Wild Deputy filly, who has been first or second in eight of nine lifetime.

One for the road: Crypt De Chine has won three in a row and five of his last six and he can continue the streak in today's fourth at Bay Meadows. The gelding has won six of eight at the distance (one mile). Chad Schvaneveldt will ride for trainer John Terry Marshall.

Exotically speaking: A pick four using Runaway Pro, Nanogram and Ella Eria in the sixth, Single All All and Kid Rio in the seventh, single Singletary in the eighth and Mighty Forum, Worldly Excess, Thats A Foxy Lady and Cherry Rose in the ninth.

Winners: Previous day/meet total: 3/63. Money: Previous day/meet total: $12.20/$338.40. Total money bet: $412.
