Police Chief Bratton Defies the Status Quo

May 27, 2003

Re "Gen. Patton, er, Bratton, Turns Big Guns on Wrong Targets," May 21: Steve Lopez is back at it again. He just can't seem to understand the concept that Chief William Bratton is a different kind of leader for the city and the Los Angeles Police Department. It is not status quo or business as usual with this man. Bratton came to Los Angeles with a set of core beliefs and values. The man is willing to fight for his causes. That is something we have not seen too often in L.A. Most of the folks Lopez is accustomed to are the weak professional politicians who don't believe in anything except being elected.

I was so amazed how the politicians on the L.A. City Council felt when Bratton tore a page out of the Ronald Reagan playbook. "If you can't make them see the light, make them feel the heat." I surely enjoyed seeing and hearing those politicians cry and moan when Bratton rallied the public to support his cause of public safety. Keep it up, Bill. The Gipper would be so proud!
