LETTERS TO THE TIMES

Mentor Programs

November 08, 2003

It is a sad day for students at Parkman Junior High School in Woodland Hills. The mentor program, which has been in effect for the last three years, was abruptly canceled. It didn't lack for mentor volunteers. What it lacked was funding to assign teachers to the program.

This is a local problem -- but a larger disgrace. We see public service announcements about mentor programs and, in this case, when volunteers rose to the call, they were dismissed without even the courtesy of being notified that the program had been abandoned. The losers, of course, are the children who are most in need.

Does anyone care?
