Late Field Goal Does Trick for Maryland

Nick Novak made a 43-yard field goal with 23 seconds left to give Maryland a 26-24 victory over North Carolina State on Saturday at Raleigh, N.C.

The loss spoiled senior day for N.C. State quarterback Philip Rivers, who completed 16 of 30 passes for 276 yards. The Wolfpack also retired Rivers' No. 17 before the game.

The Terrapins, who improved to 8-3 overall and 5-2 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, rallied from 14 points down in the final 6:23, with Scott McBrien leading drives that resulted in two touchdowns and the field goal.

Maryland's final possession began with 1:50 left after running back T.A. McLendon fumbled for N.C. State (7-5, 4-4) at its 46-yard line. It took five plays to set up Novak's winner.

Craig Candeto ran for 150 yards and three touchdowns, and Navy (7-4) clinched its first winning season since 1997 with a 63-34 victory over Central Michigan (3-9) at Annapolis, Md.... Jamaal Branch rushed for 280 yards and had a game-winning 87-yard touchdown run to lead Colgate (12-0, 7-0) to a 45-38 victory over Holy Cross (1-11, 1-6) in a Patriot League game at Worcester, Mass. It was Colgate's 18th consecutive victory.... Mike Mitchell threw five touchdown passes and Dan Castles had four scoring receptions to lead Pennsylvania (10-0, 7-0) to a 59-7 victory over Cornell (1-9, 0-7) in an Ivy League game at Philadelphia.... Ryan Fitzpatrick threw four touchdown passes to lead Harvard (7-3, 4-3) to a 37-19 victory over archrival Yale (6-4, 4-3) in an Ivy League game at New Haven, Conn.

MIDWEST

Ben Roethlisberger threw four touchdown passes and No. 18 Miami of Ohio (10-1, 7-0) rolled to a 49-31 victory over Ohio (2-9, 1-6) in a Mid-American Conference game at Athens, Ohio. The RedHawks have won 10 in a row, their longest streak since 1975.... Josh Harris passed for two touchdowns and ran for two more to lead No. 22 Bowling Green (9-2, 6-1) to a 41-14 victory over Ball State (4-8, 3-5) in a MAC game at Muncie, Ind.... Trinity Dawson rushed for 125 yards and a touchdown to lead Toledo (8-3, 6-1) to a 34-17 win over Western Michigan (5-7, 4-4) in a MAC game at Toledo, Ohio.... Bryan Borreson kicked a 41-yard field goal and Utah (9-2, 6-1) became the first team to shut out Brigham Young (4-8, 3-4) in 28 years with a 3-0 victory at Provo, Utah, to clinch the Mountain West Conference title. BYU had not been shut out since losing at Arizona State, 20-0, on Sept. 27, 1975 -- an NCAA- record span of 361 games.... DonTrell Moore rushed for 153 yards and D.D. Cox had 127 yards to lead New Mexico (8-4, 5-2) to a 26-3 victory over Wyoming (4-7, 2-4) in a Mountain West game at Laramie, Wyo.... Eric Richardson rushed for 179 yards and three touchdowns to lead Tulsa (8-4, 6-2) to a 34-32 victory over San Jose State (3-8, 2-6) in a WAC game at San Jose.... Backup quarterback Justin Holland relieved an injured Bradlee Van Pelt in the third quarter and led Colorado State (7-5, 4-3) on the game-winning drive in the fourth quarter for a 24-23 Mountain West victory at Nevada Las Vegas (5-6, 1-5).... Thomas Ford rushed for 237 yards and Casey Allen caught three touchdown passes to lead Linfield (10-0) to a 31-23 win over Redlands (6-4) in the first round of the NCAA Division III playoffs at McMinnville, Ore.
