Gates Foundation Gives $11 Million to Schools

November 27, 2003|From Staff and Wire Reports

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has given $11 million to the San Diego school district to assist three underperforming high schools by breaking them into smaller schools where students can receive more individual attention, officials said.

One goal of the effort is to increase the number of low-income and minority students who go to college. A study has found that only about a third of the district's students are ready for college when they leave school.

The Gates foundation has given more than $670 million to support 1,800 schools nationwide.
