Turkey Day TV: The platter's full

November 27, 2003|John Scheibe

Today being Thanksgiving, eating and watching television would seem to go hand in hand, so the networks and cable channels have prepared a platter of holiday program trimmings for the hungry viewer.

Parades: The holiday feast starts off with three marching extravaganzas at 9 a.m.: the 77th annual "Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade," from New York City, on NBC and Spanish-language KVEA-TV; the "CBS Thanksgiving Day Parade," anchored by Hannah Storm and Dave Price; and the "State Street Thanksgiving Parade," on ABC.

Specials: Turkey Day goes to the dogs at noon when NBC presents "The National Dog Show." Actor John O'Hurley ("Seinfeld") follows the canines as they are put through their paces at the Kennel Club of Philadelphia. Viewers will have the opportunity to judge the best in show competition by voting online at MSNBC.com.

KCET reprises its "Great Performances" broadcast of the Royal National Theatre's production of "Oklahoma!," with Hugh Jackman and Josefina Gabrielle, at 8 p.m.

And Harry Connick Jr. will star in his own musical variety show, "Harry for the Holidays," on NBC at 10 p.m., featuring music from his new Christmas album.

Sports: In football, the Green Bay Packers play the Detroit Lions in a traditional Thanksgiving NFL matchup at 9:30 a.m. on Fox, followed by the Miami Dolphins at the Dallas Cowboys at 1 p.m. on CBS. At 4:30 p.m. on ESPN, Mississippi plays at Mississippi State.

Marathons: ABC will broadcast a five-hour string of previous Thanksgiving-themed episodes from its current lineup of prime-time sitcoms, starting at 11 a.m. with "Hope & Faith."

Cable's Spike channel goes into action with an all-day James Bond movie festival at 9 a.m.

Movies: NBC presents at 2 p.m. the original "Miracle on 34th Street," starring Maureen O'Hara, Edmund Gwenn, John Payne and Natalie Wood; later, Eddie Murphy stars in "Dr. Dolittle 2," at 8 p.m. on Fox.
