November 29, 2003|From Staff and Wire Reports

Mary Quinne, 90, an actress and film producer who helped pioneer Egyptian cinema, died Tuesday of natural causes in Cairo.

With her husband, director Ahmed Galal, she set up the movie production company Studio Galal in 1944.

The studio helped establish Egypt as the center of the Arabic-language cinema industry. It also provided the first break for many young actors and directors.

Quinne, whose original name was Mary Younis, acted in or produced more than 45 motion pictures. Best-known on that list were "The Seventh Wife," "Sacrificing My Love" and "Prisoner No. 17."
