Coalition to Spread News With 200,000 Radios

November 30, 2003|From Times Wire Reports

The U.S.-led coalition will distribute more than 200,000 shortwave radios to people across Afghanistan, the U.S. military said.

The radios, each powered by a crank, would be given to Afghans free to allow them "unfettered access to many sources of news," Maj. Bryan Hilferty said at Bagram air base. Most of Afghanistan lacks a regular supply of electricity.

The announcement comes as the former Taliban regime and its allies have stepped up their campaign to undermine the U.S.-backed government.
