October 23, 2003|From Times Wire Reports

Romania said Nobel Peace Prize laureate and Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel would head a new commission to bring to light the nation's World War II role in the killing of hundreds of thousands of Jews.

As recently as this summer the government denied that the Holocaust ever took place in the Balkan country.

Romanian-born Wiesel, 75, will be joined by Tuvia Friling, head of the Israel State Archives, and other experts.
