Protesters Who Sought Reforms Face Trial

October 23, 2003|From Times Wire Reports

Saudi Arabia said 83 demonstrators arrested last week would be sent to court for taking part in a rare street protest to demand reforms and the release of political prisoners. The official Saudi Press Agency said 188 others arrested at the rally were released.

The group facing charges "does not reflect the reality of Saudi society and their actions do not conform with our Islamic values," the announcement said. It did not say what charges they might face.
