Former FEMA Director to Investigate Fatal Fire

October 24, 2003|From Times Wire Reports

Gov. Rod Blagojevich appointed James Lee Witt, former head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, to investigate a fire that killed six people in a high-rise Chicago office building last week.

Blagojevich said he asked Witt to investigate the fire at the Cook County administration building because a team being selected by the county board president lacked expertise.

Questions have been raised about the building's lack of sprinklers and locked doors that prevented employees from escaping a smoky stairwell.
