HOW TIMES HANDICAPPER BOB MIESZERSKI SEES THE JUVENILE UNFOLDING

START

A winner of four of his five starts, CUVEE was right with the lead from the break in his big Futurity victory at Belmont Park and he should come out running under Jerry Bailey, along with CAPITANO, CHAPEL ROYAL and RACE FOR GLORY, the California-bred stretching out for the first time for trainer Wayne Lukas. Lurking behind should be the Richard Mandella-trained duo of SIPHONIZER and MINISTER ERIC, along with the Irish unknown RELAXED GESTURE and CONSECRATE. The others figure to trail.

AT THE HALF-MILE POLE

CUVEE should continue to show the way with CAPITANO, MINISTER ERIC and SIPHONIZER positioned. RACE FOR GLORY could be starting to struggle, along with the overrated CONSECRATE. CHAPEL ROYAL should be a factor, but for how long? He has given every indication that sprinting is his preferred game. The back runners with a chance, especially TIGER HUNT, who finished well for second in the Lane's End Futurity at Keeneland, will be waiting for their cues.

AT THE QUARTER POLE

CUVEE, who has won his four races by an average of 7 1/2 lengths, will be in front, but he could find the stretch taxing in his first try around two turns. CAPITANO, something of an overachiever, will be prominent, and so will the Mandella duo of MINISTER ERIC, who should relish more ground, and SIPHONIZER. TIGER HUNT will be starting to hit his best stride and ACTION THIS DAY, the third Mandella entry and a longshot, should also be mounting a rally from behind.

FINISH

In what may be the most wide-open race on the card, and diluted because of the absence of such youngsters as RULER'S COURT, BIRDSTONE and EUROSILVER, MINISTER ERIC could spring a mild surprise in what should be a close finish. The Old Trieste colt has improved with racing and seems the type who will do better around two turns. CUVEE could save the place on his class, and TIGER HUNT will finish strongly and seems a definite colt to watch heading into 2004.
