Former Laker Earvin "Magic" Johnson's Canyon-Johnson Urban Fund announced that it would be part of a joint venture to develop a $96-million condominium and retail project in Chicago's South Loop district.

Construction has begun on the former site of the Central Police Station and Courts Building. The development, called State Place, will include four residential structures with 237 condominiums priced from $200,000 to $800,000, said Bobby Turner, a managing partner of Canyon-Johnson. The buildings will include 61,500 square feet of retail space.
