The setup: Abagnale uses his smarts and charm to seduce people into believing him.

Does it work? Frank eventually gets caught but later becomes an expert on financial fraud for the FBI.

"The Italian Job" (2003)

The players: Thief Charlie Croker (Mark Wahlberg) and his crew: Lyle (Seth Green), a computer whiz; Handsome Rob (Jason Statham), who is catnip to women; explosives expert Left Ear (Mos Def); and safecracker Stella (Charlize Theron).

The con: Croker and his cronies use a false-identity con to avenge the death of one of their crew (Donald Sutherland) murdered by a traitor (Edward Norton) in their midst after a successful robbery in Venice.

The setup: Stella, the daughter of Charlie's murdered mentor, is sent by Croker to romance the man who killed her father, so she can gain information about his routine and security system.

Does it work? Yes, with the help of a lot of Mini Coopers.

"Buffalo Soldiers" (2003)

The player: Ray Elwood (Joaquin Phoenix)

The con: Elwood, an ambitious company clerk for a U.S. Army supply base in Germany before the fall of the Berlin Wall, wheels and deals in black market items under the nose of the company's clueless colonel (Ed Harris).

The setup: He comes across some heavy weaponry and decides to sell it to a leading crime kingpin.

Does it work? Ray is way over his head and discovers there's a spy in his squad.
