No Excuses, Just a Title for Giants

The wild card, of course, would ease the Dodgers' pain over failing to achieve their division goal.

A new opportunity in a new season, Roberts called it, and Green said there was no reason, at this point, to lament the division title.

"I think our focus has to be on where we are now," he said. "We obviously didn't play as well as we hoped we would coming out of spring training, but if we can find a way to make the playoffs it would make up for the tough times."

Manager Jim Tracy agreed.

Citing injuries to position players, losing 26 of 36 games at one point and the ongoing offensive struggle, he said there has to be gratification in displaying the resiliency to be 11 games over .500 and still involved in the wild-card race.

"I don't want to stand here and make excuses," he said, "but considering how good our pitching has been and the fact we've scored one run or less in 37 games, it's safe to say that with a few more hits scattered here and there, the division race might have been different as well."

One thing for sure: Wire to wire, there were no excuses from the Giants.
