If the recall election is delayed until March, how much will it cost the state?

County officials aren't sure, partly because no one knows if all 135 candidates will remain on the ballot if the election is delayed. If all the candidates stay in the race, then counties might have to print extra ballot pages.

In Los Angeles County, officials said they might have to lease additional voting machines to accommodate both the recall and the presidential primary election.

But counties estimate that they have already spent as much as $35 million on the special election. Those costs include printing and mailing sample and absentee ballots, printing the election-day ballots and paying staff overtime. The state has also spent about $11 million printing and sending out the Voter Information Guide.
