September 23, 2003|From Times Wire Reports

Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi kept Japan's reform-minded economy and banking minister in a Cabinet reshuffle. He reappointed Heizo Takenaka, architect of the government's fiscal austerity policies, despite calls to oust him.

Among those Koizumi replaced was Finance Minister Masajuro Shiokawa, who is ailing. Appointed to the post was Sadakazu Tanigaki, who had overseen public security. Koizumi also replaced the education, trade, justice, general affairs and transportation ministers.
