Arrest of 13-Year-Old Prompts Police Reaction

September 25, 2003|From Times staff reports

Following the Tuesday night arrest of a 13-year-old boy alleged to be the gang member whose shotgun blast wounded three people at Lytle Creek Park, San Bernardino Police Chief Garrett Zimmon appeared at a press conference to assure residents that the incident is a rarity.

"A 13-year-old shooting innocent people in one of our parks is a significant event," police spokesman Mark Emoto said. "This is atypical, and this is not going to happen in our city's parks."

Emoto said the teenager shouted "Don't wear red in the park!" before firing. Two girls and a woman suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
