Guilty Pleas in Crossbow Attack on Sea Lion

A former San Diego sportfishing company crew member and a Morro Bay man have pleaded guilty to trying to kill a marine mammal. They face up to a year in prison and a $100,000 fine for a crossbow attack last November that left a sea lion pup with an arrow in its neck.

Cavanaugh Sportfishing crew member Anthony Hill, 18, and Matthew Lyon, 38, admitted violating the federal Marine Mammal Protection Act. Sentencing is scheduled for Jan. 12 in Los Angeles.

Sportfishing business owner William Cavanaugh has agreed to pay a $4,000 fine and make restitution to the center that treated the 5-month-old female pup, which was found two days later.
