Protesters Call for President to Resign

THE WORLD | IN BRIEF / ARMENIA

April 10, 2004|From Times Wire Reports

More than 10,000 people protested in the heart of the Armenian capital, Yerevan, to demand the resignation of President Robert Kocharyan, defying a ban that was imposed after a smaller rally Monday.

Two opposition parties that organized the peaceful protest accuse Kocharyan of rigging last year's elections, corruption, human rights abuses and mismanaging the economy.

Last April, Armenia's Constitutional Court confirmed the results of the vote but suggested that a referendum be held within a year to gauge confidence in the nation's leaders.
