Argeo Quadri, 93;Conductor in Opera Houses of the World

Italian conductor Argeo Quadri, who led performances in some of the greatest of the world's opera houses, died Wednesday in Milan, his family said. He was 93.

Born in Como, Italy, Quadri studied music at the Milan Conservatory, graduating in 1933. He conducted throughout his native country before becoming conductor at London's Covent Garden in 1956.

His strongest ties were with the State Opera, Vienna's leading opera house, where he conducted 211 performances. But he also conducted at New York's Metropolitan Opera and at the Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires, as well as in Tokyo and throughout Italy. He worked with many major opera singers, among them Maria Callas.
