Expulsion of Cleric Temporarily Suspended

THE WORLD | IN BRIEF / FRANCE

April 24, 2004|From Times Wire Reports

A court cleared the way for the return to France of a Muslim cleric who was expelled to Algeria after advocating wife-beating and stoning of women in certain circumstances.

The expulsion separated Abdelkader Bouziane from his children who remain in France, the Lyon court said in temporarily suspending the deportation order.

The ruling allows the imam to return at his own cost -- at least until the court rules in several weeks whether the expulsion was legal.
