Longer Race Might Be Fit for Kings Whisper

April 25, 2004|BOB MIESZERSKI

A return to six furlongs is what Kings Whisper may need to get back to the winner's circle after tonight's seventh, a $5,000 claimer for older Arabians.

Trained by Billy Lewis for owner William Scott, Kings Whisper, a 5-year-old Wiking gelding, has been third, fifth, fourth and fourth in his last four starts at 4 1/2 furlongs, but was an easy winner the last time he ran six furlongs. He scored by 2 1/2 lengths as the even-money favorite Feb. 12.

With regular rider Adolfo Rodriguez moving to Proof Arbi, who is also trained by Lewis, Juan Leyva picks up the mount on Kings Whisper, who will break from the inside post in the field of seven.

Move It, Sey Mag Proof, Rubbertigerpants, another Lewis trainee, 14-time winner Scheriff and Count Okba round out the field.

The picks: 1. Charmd N Dangerous. 2. Gildas My Dasher. 3. Houston To Marilyn. 4. Fishers Boogie. 5. Gambling Hope. 6. My Son Jeremy. 7. Kings Whisper. 8. Lanes End. 9. Chicks Magnet.

Four! Nashua's Asset and My Son Jeremy in the sixth, Kings Whisper in the seventh, Posting The Colors, Royal Prince Juno and Lanes End in the eighth and Ballistic Beduino, Chicks Magnet and Dash To Treasure in the ninth.

Shots in the dark: Shades Of Purple is a first-time starter in a weak first race. A Strawfly Belle steps up after a claim in the second.

Post Time: 5:30 p.m.
