QUICK TAKES

Kilborn to exit 'Late, Late Show'

August 14, 2004|Jonathan Taylor

Craig Kilborn is stepping down as host of CBS' "The Late, Late Show."

His departure date has not been set, but it's likely to be before the start of the new TV season in mid-September.

A former "Sports Center" anchor on ESPN and the original host of Comedy Central's "Daily Show," Kilborn told Daily Variety that he plans to focus on writing and producing projects for television. Kilborn could not be reached for comment Friday.

CBS confirmed Friday that Kilborn is leaving but had no announcement about his successor.

Kilborn's higher-rated time-slot rival, Conan O'Brien, is a logical choice, but he is under contract as host of NBC's "Late Night" through the end of 2005. "Daily Show" host Jon Stewart, another likely candidate, recently signed a lucrative deal with Comedy Central that runs through 2008.
