IN BRIEF / SAN JOSE

August 14, 2004|From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Police shot and killed the son of a sheriff's deputy, claiming the young man had gestured toward them with a knife, officers said.

Johnnie Nakao, the 21-year-old son of Santa Clara County Sheriff's Deputy John Nakao, had tried to steal a CD player in a Radio Shack on Thursday, police said. The officers tried to use the less-lethal Taser stun guns to subdue him, but the weapons malfunctioned, the officers said.

The two officers had chased the suspect for about 300 yards before the young man "turned around and came at the officers with a knife," said Sgt. Steve Dixon.

When the Taser malfunctioned again, both officers shot.
