Nostalgia Is Their Big Menu Item

August 15, 2004

I was amused by the interviews with the venerable waiters at Musso & Frank Grill ("The Musso Mystique: If It Ain't Broke . . . ," by Michael T. Jarvis, Metropolis, July 25). I've dined there a number of times over the past 20 years. Do they deserve a reputation for being surly? Yes!

Musso & Frank is a Hollywood fixture, a landmark; it is not fine dining. The food has ranged from good to poor, never great. The service is usually efficient, but never friendly. If you want nostalgia and history at a price, go to Musso & Frank. If you want excellent food and service (at a better price) go to Taylor's Steak House. If you want an honest opinion about a restaurant, ask the customers--not the waiters!
