The U.S. Department of Agriculture says that carbohydrates, which anchor the food pyramid, should form the basis of our diet--although popular food plans recommend limiting them for weight loss. Carbohydrates do provide energy in the same way that gas fuels automobiles. But not all carbs are created equal.
