Three U.S. Troops Killed in Iraq

BAGHDAD — Three U.S. troops were killed Wednesday in Iraq, including a soldier shot in Baghdad's Sadr City neighborhood, where the military said it killed more than 50 militiamen.

Sadr City is a stronghold of Shiite Muslim cleric Muqtada Sadr, who said Wednesday that he would be willing to leave a shrine in Najaf under certain conditions.In Najaf, one Marine was killed in fighting Wednesday, the military announced. It gave no details.

A second Marine died after a vehicle accident in Al Anbar province, which includes the cities of Ramadi and Fallouja.

At least 946 American troops and three civilian Pentagon employees have died in the war.

Elsewhere Wednesday, a mortar round hit a market in the northern city of Mosul, killing five civilians and wounding 21, the U.S. military said.

Near Hillah, south of Baghdad, an American civilian was among seven people wounded in a mortar attack.
