February 13, 2004|From Times Wire Reports

A strike called by Nepal's Maoist rebels closed businesses and halted transportation in Katmandu, Birganj and Narayanghat on Thursday, a day before the eighth anniversary of the start of an anti-monarchy revolt.

Officials said no violence was reported during the strike, but six people died Wednesday in a bombing in eastern Nepal, and soldiers killed 12 rebels. More than 8,000 people have been killed in the conflict.
