Sempra Energy, owner of the largest U.S. natural-gas distributor, received a subpoena in January from the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission on the price of the fuel.
The inquiry is part of a broader investigation into a surge in gas prices last year, the San Diego-based utility owner said in a Securities and Exchange Commission filing.
