The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles has asked a federal judge in San Diego for permission to intervene in a dispute about a state law that opened the doors to hundreds of decades-old sexual abuse cases.
Lawyers for the archdiocese argue that they have a special interest because the suits "threaten to ruin the archdiocese economically and to impose unprecedented and punitive stigmatization upon the church."
