Donors Pledge $1.1 Billion in Haiti Aid

Donors pledged $1.1 billion for Haiti as the Caribbean country, impoverished by decades of economic and political crises, attempts to recover from an armed revolt that drove President Jean-Bertrand Aristide into exile five months ago.

A donor conference in Washington praised Prime Minister Gerard Latortue's interim government for mending relations with the international community and taking charge of rebuilding efforts to make way for elections next year.

Pledges included $230 million from the U.S., $325 million from the European Commission and $260 million from the Inter-American Development Bank.
