LETTERS TO THE TIMES

A Far-Out Colony

June 26, 2004

Re "To Boldly Get Out of Here Is a Good Idea," Commentary, June 23: Douglas MacKinnon writes on a concern that is shared by many. The idea that humanity should colonize space so that a disaster on Earth won't make us extinct has been expressed by scientists such as Paul Davies, Freeman Dyson, Gerard O'Neill, Martin Rees, Carl Sagan and Robert Shapiro; organizations such as the Alliance to Rescue Civilization, the Mars Society, the National Space Society and the Space Frontier Foundation; authors such as Isaac Asimov, Ray Bradbury and Arthur C. Clarke; and people from around the world.
