Condo Association Sues Rigas for Fees

March 05, 2004|From Bloomberg News

Adelphia Communications Corp. founder John Rigas was sued by a condominium association, which contends he has not paid fees on a Manhattan condo unit since January 2003.

The suit, filed in state court in New York by the board of the Saratoga Condominium at 330 East 75th St., contends Rigas owes $14,689.62 in fees for unit 23A. The association filed a lien against the property last month, according to the suit, which seeks a court order to sell the unit to pay the debt.

Rigas, 79, and his sons, Michael, 50, and Timothy, 47, are on trial in federal court in New York, accused of hiding billions of dollars in debt at Adelphia, the No. 5 U.S. cable television provider, lying about revenue and operations and stealing cash and other personal benefits.

Outside of court, Rigas said Thursday that the condominium unit belonged to Greenwood Village, Colo.-based Adelphia even though it had been listed in his name since 1994. The suit says Rigas bought the unit Oct. 14, 1993.

"The deed was never transferred over from my name," Rigas said. "That unit belonged to Adelphia and they didn't make any payments on it."
