Longtime Jazz Deejay Chuck Niles Dies

Chuck Niles, an institution in the world of jazz radio, died Monday evening at Santa Monica Hospital of complications from a stroke. He was 76.

Judy Jankowski, general manager of station KKJZ-FM (88.1) in Long Beach, said Niles died shortly after 8:30 p.m. He had suffered a stroke Feb. 26 and never regained consciousness.

Niles, of Marina del Rey, broadcast in Southern California for more than 40 years and had been with KKJZ since 1990.

Among other forms of recognition for his contributions to jazz in Southern California, Niles was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for his broadcasts.
