Blast Causes Crenshaw Power Outage

March 20, 2004

An explosion in an underground vault Friday knocked out power to about 23,000 homes and businesses in the Crenshaw district.

The blast occurred shortly after 8 a.m. in the 3700 block of Crenshaw Boulevard, the Department of Water and Power said. No one was injured, but two circuits were affected. The cause of the failure wasn't known.

By 9:15 a.m., electrical service had been restored to about 10,000 customers.

At 9 p.m., 800 customers, including the Baldwin Hills Plaza, were still without power, the DWP said. Power was expected to be restored by this morning.
