Junior Olympics ski races were held over the weekend, and some parents were a tad uncomfortable having a man who needs such protection skiing alongside their children.
"With all this stuff going on in Spain and Iraq, some people are kind of asking, 'Why did he pick this weekend?' " said Jean Fruth of Huntsville, Utah, who brought her 12-year-old son to the races.
Sunday morning, a caravan of sport utility vehicles swept into the parking lot at Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church, and Kerry and his wife -- 15 minutes late for Mass -- ducked through the back door. Men with suspiciously bulging suit jackets and earphones had already "swept" the church and were now seated among the worshipers.
When the couple rose to get in line for Communion, two Secret Service agents whispered for a moment before one positioned himself behind them. The agent took Communion too. "They told us they were coming," Pastoral Associate Teresa Gregory said of the agents. "It was fine. The Kerrys have been coming here for a long time, and they're always welcome."
