A chase through two cities ended Friday when Fountain Valley police shot the female driver.

Details were sketchy regarding the 15-minute pursuit through Fountain Valley and Santa Ana that culminated in a crash and the shooting.

Neither the woman's condition nor identity were immediately known.

No information on the incident was available from Fountain Valley police late Friday.

Officers from the Santa Ana Police Department, which assisted in the pursuit, and the California Highway Patrol, which monitored the event by radio, however, provided the following account:

The chase began at Harbor Boulevard and Warner Avenue in Fountain Valley at 6:55 p.m. after a woman driving a Volkswagen tried to assault an officer. Details of what she did were not available.

Driving at speeds exceeding 70 mph, she traveled north on Harbor into Santa Ana, where she drove the wrong way down at least one street and nearly hit two pedestrians.

"This person was all over the road," said Officer Stacy Willits, a CHP spokeswoman.
