Sixth-seeded Irvine Concordia moved a step closer to successfully defending its championship by defeating third-seeded Lindsey Wilson College (Ky.), 61-58, in the quarterfinals of the 67th National Assn. of Intercollegiate Athletics Division I men's tournament at Kansas City, Mo.
Freshman guard Brian McFadden scored only three points, but his two free throws with 29 seconds left gave the Eagles a 59-58 lead. Senior guard Jeremy Groth made two free throws with two seconds left to secure the victory.
Concordia (33-4) will play the University of Mobile (Ala.) in Monday's semifinals.
The 15th-seeded Rams (28-9) advanced with a 75-62 victory over unseeded Oklahoma City (20-12).
In the other semifinal, top-seeded Mountain State (W.Va.) (35-1) plays unseeded Barber-Scotia (N.C.) (25-10).
Concordia led at halftime, 35-34. There were 11 lead changes in the second half.
McFadden's free throws gave the Eagles the lead for good.
Center Nick Vanderlaan led the Eagles with 15 points and 12 rebounds.
The Blue Raiders (33-4) had three players score in double figures, led by junior guard Cetric Anderson's 16 points.
Megan Storck's three-point basket with 30 seconds left at St. Joseph, Mo., gave California of Pennsylvania (35-1) its first NCAA Division II championship with a 75-72 victory over Drury (36-2). Sara McKinney led California with 26 points, and Storck finished with 16 points and 10 assists.... Creighton advanced to its first Women's National Invitation Tournament championship game with an 81-72 victory over Richmond (23-10) at Omaha. The Blue Jays (23-9) play the winner of today's Iowa State-Nevada Las Vegas game.
